This is the extraordinary story of a man who, in little more than 20 years, changed the world forever. In a journey that is both literal and historical, host Rageh Omaar retraces the footsteps of the Prophet, from his humble beginnings in Mecca to his struggles with accepting his Prophetic role; from his flight to Medina to his subsequent military and political successes and failures - through to his death and his legacy.

Episodes include:
The Seeker - This film examines Muhammad's birth and early life, his first marriage to Khadijah, and how he received the first of the revelations that so profoundly affected both his life and the lives of those closest to him.

Holy Wars - Omaar shines a light on key events in Muhammad's life, including the Night Journey to Jerusalem, his life-threatening departure from Mecca, the establishment of the Constitution of Medina that recognizes the rights of all people (Jews, Christians, and pagan tribes) living in that city, and the war with the Meccan tribes, with implications on the world today.

Holy Peace - The final film investigates key events during the later part of the Prophet's life, including the introduction of a moral code known as sharia and the concept of jihad, explores Muhammad's use of marriage to build alliances, and looks at the key messages included in his final sermon.

Shows anyone can make up a religion
Review by Mike on 12/06/20 review stating Shows anyone can make up a religion
So 600 years after Christ he denounces Christ. Doesnt make much sense to me. Polygamy is okay doesnt make much sense to me. They say Abraham and Ishmael built the little square in the courtyard... Dont believe that one either! Its all lies

The Life of Muhammad - Very Biased
Review by Rob T. on 07/17/20 review stating The Life of Muhammad - Very Biased
This documentary is very one-sided. It glosses over violent passages in the Quran and in Muhammads life with less than truthful descriptions relying on biased Muslim accounts for historical evidence. It doesnt even begin to scratch the surface of all of the violence described in the Hadith or Quran. It also heavily relies on commentary from well known Islam apologists such as Karen Armstrong and Tariq Ramadan. This seems more like an attempt to defend Muhammads actions and Islams prescripts as opposed to taking an unbiased, historical look at his life and the religion he founded.

biased and incomplete
Review by Moe on 07/17/20 review stating biased and incomplete
surprisingly one sided for a documentary sponsored by PBS--presumably afraid of retaliation is my only conclusion. Reality today shows a completely different version of the faith started by this man. Something in this documentary is obviously missing to explain the connection between Muhammad and his followers today. It was so easy for PBS to reveal and slam the negativities of the Roman Catholic church in secrets of the Vatican yet PBS is unable to present the reality of Muhammads faith and teaching. I wont be donating anymore if my money doesnt support the holistic presentation of an issue.

Bias documentary
Review by Juan on 07/17/20 review stating Bias documentary
This documentary was so bias, they talk about Muhammad and Aisha, but they didnt mention Aisha was 9 years old when consuming marriage with 53 year old Muhammad (Hadith of Bukhari, book 62, vol. 7 #65), (Sahih Muslim book 8 #3311), (Hadith of Bukhari, book 58, volume 5, #234), (Volume 008, Book 073, Hadith Number 151), (Al-Tabari, Vol. 9, p. 131). They say Muhammad was tolerant and that the main exhortation of killing was Quran (9:5), when there are many other passages such as Cut necks and fingers Quran (8:12), Muhammad killed Disbelievers (Quran 9:29), Quran (9:73), Quran (3:151), Quran (9:88), Quran (9:5), Quran (9:111), and many more. They said that it was as a self defense in war when in reality the only condition stipulated was unbelievers, not self defense. They said Muhammad die, but they didnt said how he died. Muhammad was killed by a Jew woman as revenge since Muhammad killed her love ones, read Bukharis Hadith 3.786, Bukharis Hadith 4.394, Ibn Sad page 249, etc. Muhammad didnt do miracles (Quran 29:50) (Quran 10:20) (Quran 2:118)... Muhammad didnt spoke to Allah, was Gabriel (Quran 2:97). Many other issues, but those are some of the bias issues they should address and they didnt.

An excellent overview of the life of Muhammad, and helpful for a non-Muslim in understanding many of the issues in the Middle East today.

This DVD is a must see for those of us who dont understand Islam, especially the Prophet/man who delivered its message. I have a new respect for this exemplary leader whose life is an education on so many levels but who is so misunderstood by the West today.

The Life of Muhammad
Review by Jay on 07/17/20 review stating The Life of Muhammad
I have studied Islam for over 20 years and this DVD is not a true depiction on the life of Muhammad. His life has been detailed in the authentic sources of the Hadith/Sunna and the Sira which are in Arabic and have been endorsed, practised and preached by the highest authorities on Islam. This DVD has more fiction than facts.

Parts ONE and TWO of LIFE OF MOHAMMAD
Review by Les L. on 07/17/20 review stating Parts ONE and TWO of LIFE OF MOHAMMAD
I enjoyed watching this portrayal last night. I had not before seen such good cinematography of the sites of both the Kaaba in Mecca and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Thank you. I should like to have seen more of the man himself; the controversy he generated through his passage through the Middle East and how he achieved the historical and religious roles he has assumed or been assigned. Karen Armstrong whom I admire and some of the other well-known Christians in the narrative tread so lightly to avoid controversy, whereas controversy is a big part of the story.

Instructive and Timely

The film Life of Muhammad was very interesting and informative. I have followed the history of Islam for several years, including academic instructions and interaction with persons of the faith. The film provided great depth to the basic tenants and philosophy. I was also pleased that the Battle of the Trench was explained, and the ensuing internal war between the Jewish tribes and Islam was highlighted, although controversial. The academic scholars interviewed were great assets; the location and setting of the interviews, at mosques and other scenic locations, made for an interesting format. Knowing that universities have extensive reading materials, and Islamic Studies departments, helped to increase the understanding of this complex religion, which has such an extensive following around the world. A great film!

Thoughtful Filmaking!
Review by Jim L. on 07/17/20 review stating Thoughtful Filmaking!
I viewed this series last night on Montana PBS. Mr. Rageh Omaar was excellent as a presenter of this material, and the filmography was top notch- I valued greatly being able to view many of the sites Mr. Omaar spoke about as they pertained to Mohammeds life- some really outstanding views of buildings and sites. The editorial content of the series was balanced, and I appreciated that Mr. Omaar and some of the various interviewees candidly admitted that much of Islams practice today may have been the result of how early muslims interpreted the Quran and devised Sharia laws some 200 years after Mohammeds death- I cannot say that this aspect of Islam is really any different than what has occured in the traditions of other major religions. Humans indeed tend to ruin philosophies of simplicity sometimes. The above said, I was disheartened to see Mr. Omaar interview the two convicted British muslim terrorists justifying their jihadist views. If the point of the series was to show Mohammed as an historical figure (who indeed promoted tolerance and peace among a fragmented and tribal sixth century Arab world), that entire segment left me bereft of feeling good about the compatability of Islam with western notions of democracy. I would have preferred the series end on a high note, because although not without his faults, in his time, Mohammed did act as a unifying force. How violent Jihad squares with the early teachings of Mohammed is just as troubling to me as the Christian Rights interpretation of of the teachings of Jesus. A great series, very well done!

Thoroughly enjoyed this documentary on the life of Muhammad and the history of Islam. It dispelled a number of myths about the religion, about the founder, and about current problems/issues in the Middle East. Thanks for continuing to provide informative educational programming.

Review by Morgan on 07/17/20 review stating Good movie but dont expect anything new
I already knew the story inside and out. But I wanted to see a little Hollywood put into the action. From that angle it succeeds but if you are looking for something new it kind of falls flat.I am always searching for even one reason why anyone would believe any of this (or care)and after seein this one, it still is a mystery to me. .It is kind of like old Cokes in new cans.
