This three-part series explores ways to improve social relationships, learn to cope with depression and anxiety and become more positive, resilient individuals. The series host, Harvard psychologist and best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness, Professor Daniel Gilbert, talks with experts about the latest science on what makes us ""tick"" and how we can find support for the emotional issues we all face.

Each episode weaves the compelling personal stories of ordinary people and the latest scientific research, along with revealing comments from celebrities such as Chevy Chase, Larry David, Alanis Morissette, Robert Kennedy Jr. and Richard Gere.

Professor Gilbert, whose research examines why people so often mispredict what will make them happy, says, ""Science has revealed three important facts about happiness: You can't be happy alone; you can't be happy all the time; you can be happier than you are. Our three shows examine each of these three facts.""

Episode 1: Family, Friends & Lovers
The first episode looks at the importance of relationships and why they are central to our emotional well-being. What are the cognitive and neurological processes underpinning our everyday interactions, and can they help us to understand why some relationships flourish and others fail?

Episode 2: Facing Our Fears
In the second episode, we look at emotions that are commonly regarded as obstacles to happiness - such as anger, fear, anxiety and despair. Why do we have these emotions and how can we best manage them? Our brains are designed for survival, and the negative emotions they create are vital to that mission. But those negative emotions can spiral out of control with debilitating effects.

Episode 3: Rethinking Happiness
Finally, the last episode explores happiness. It is so critical to our well-being and, yet, it remains such an elusive goal for many of us. What is it, why is it important and how can we attain more of it?

The film is complemented by a content-rich Web site, www.pbs.org/thisemotionallife. It provides vetted resources and opportunities to build social support networks around topics highlighted in the series, such as the importance of early attachment, how to heal strained or damaged relationships, PTSD, stress, depression, grief, resilience and our pursuit of happiness.

The Web site is the centerpiece of a nationwide outreach campaign, extending the reach of the project beyond the broadcast. The effort provides people with valuable information, offers access to mechanisms for social support and helps mitigate the stigma attached to mental illness.

Review by Anonymous on 07/17/20 review stating THEE best presentation of this topic
I was raised in a very wealthy but violent and extreme household. I killed my father at 16 yrs old and was found not guilty in huge trial. I have spent 35, of my 45 yrs, searching, seeking and learning how to cope from all corners of the earth.. I did ok on my own for many yrs. but, after my open heart surgery at 39, the wind was knocked out of my sails. the Depression/PTSD took hold, hard. i was ready to give up. this program gave me new hope and knowledge to continue the journey. Thank you. Very Much. Long Live PBS.

This Emotional Life - Family, Friends,
Review by De B. on 07/17/20 review stating This Emotional Life - Family, Friends,
I thought the episode was compelling. It ought be be a prerequisite for every couple considering marriage, especially young couples under 30. Its too bad that we dont teach our young people about real love, sexual intimacy in a relationship, and how to give-and-take in a marriage -- the real commitment in a relationship. how to be selfless; how to communicate with the other; We cant teach what we dont know.

I watched the episode on personal relationships last night and was completely glued to the television. It was an insightful piece that helped me reflect on my own life and the special people I share it with. Best Public Service proramming yet
Review by Rachel on 07/17/20 review stating Best Public Service proramming yet
I could have enjoyed it more without the celebrity comments spliced between common peoples experiences. Common people who were brave enough to bare their hard times publicly, as opposed to making general statements. The bit on self help was longer than it needed to be. However, the couple coping honestly with their therapist about infidelity and the vets coping with post traumatic stress syndrome were amazing. Thank you to the participants who opened their lives up to viewers.

Rethinking Happiness was an episode from This Emotional Life DVD that aired on PBS Wednesday, January 6th. All I can say is WOW! I was channel surfing and tonights broadcast episode caught my interest RETHINKING HAPPINESS. I thought the information was simple yet honest about what can help us create our own happiness. This would be a great gift for a friend or family member who has seen better times. The presentation was interesting and did not seem clinically boring as you might expect.

Review by Red S. on 07/17/20 review stating please watch this and know there is hope
Depending on your place in life, this is an outstanding must see, hear, feel in your soul. Your spirits will soar, and hopefully begin to understand that there is hope, even after traumatic life changes, in an instant. Watching this series, at this point in my life: at this moment wants me to share my story, see human beings; talk to them; hear the birds, maybe go to a zoo. Most importantly; to reach out to those who understand; and can assist those that need to be reached out to. To believe in me and how I can bring good to society.

AA fellowship
Review by Thesobrietycoach on 07/17/20 review stating AA fellowship
After 30 years of professional experience experience treating addicts and my own personal experience, I find this show is right on the money. While a previous critic is correct in talking about the importance of the 12 steps of AA, its the 12 steps being worked within the spiritual environment of AA. Technique is important, but it means little unless it happens within the context of one alcoholic/addict helping another. Its the steps beingworked within the spiritual bond that exists within the fellowship of AA. I know enough about technique to tell you the healing comes about through the human connection, not as a result of any steps, or technique, or procedure. The fellowship and the program (steps) of AA are both important and interdependent.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice. I watched the show on PBS, am purchasing the DVDs for my practice and will recommend clients do the same. An excellent, accessable set of programs on the current ideas and data about emotions. Suitable for clinicians as well as consumers.

OUTSTANDING SERIES
Review by Bolero on 07/17/20 review stating OUTSTANDING SERIES
I have worked in the field of Stress Manaagemnet, Anger Management and Domestic Violence for the past15 years. What is contained in this series gives the information in a concise and understandable presentation that everyone can easily grasp. Understanding what it is to be human is the basis for electing to make change in our life. How the Thinking, Feeling and Behaving all act together to produce who we are can be a complicated concept to understand by those suffering from any mental, psychological or emotional disorder. This series gives that foundation of understanding. I wish this was available 15 years ago. Thank you PBS

Amazing stories of average people with emotional extremes, celebrities who come across as completely lay and human because they share their emotional frailties, and scientific research with enlightening insights. I was blown away - itll be something I pop in every once in a while just to be reminded.

Watching this 3-part series left me with new hope for a better life. It revealed secrets that are not even discussed in most instances, yet they are a constant partner in ones life. The cases are real, and the message makes one aware of the elegant simplicity of seizing the moment.

Thoughtful Overview
Review by Jll on 07/17/20 review stating Thoughtful Overview
Dr. Gilbert does an excellent job for a layperson (me),-someone with psych courses in the distant past, get a feeling for the work being done presently. The weaving together of conversations with real, often suffering people, and the scientists that are doing work to help them, is masterly. Gilbert politely insists that there is good science being done to show us how to deal with our often baffling human emotions.

AA is more than fellowship
Review by Bob A. on 07/17/20 review stating AA is more than fellowship
This is an interesting, informative, entertaining series. I have one critical observation. In the discussion of AA and its success at helping addicts, I heard nothing about the 12 steps. AA was described as a self help program when the fundamental principles upon which it is based, the 12 steps, refer not to helping oneself but about the help of a Higher Power. The program focused solely upon the power of the fellowship the addict finds in AA, which is clearly very important, but the omission of any reference to the 12 steps did a great injustice to the program and its genius for helping addicts.

This is cutting edge science and wonderful to watch. I purchased it hoping that I could show this in segments to an inpatient psychiatric population, but the jury is still out on that as sometimes it gets too scientific and Im afraid the patients would lose interest.
