This is the story of the renowned institution that has been called  the “place for hope when there is no hope.” By combining the history of the institution with stories about present-day patients, the film makes an important contribution to discussions about our commitment to taking care of each other, about the role of money and profit in medicine, and about the very nature of healing itself.

The Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope and Science It began in 1883 as an unlikely partnership between a group of Catholic nuns and a country doctor named William Worrall Mayo. In the wake of a deadly tornado in rural Minnesota, Mayo and his two sons, Will and Charlie enlisted the help of Mother Alfred Moes and her nearby Order of Franciscan Sisters to care for the wounded. Later, Mother Alfred would claim to have had a vision instructing her to build a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota with Mayo as its director. It would become, she said, “world renowned for its medical arts.”

The Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope and Science tells the story of the renowned institution that has been called a “Medical Mecca,” the “Supreme Court of Medicine,” and the “place for hope when there is no hope.” By combining the history of the institution with intimate stories about present-day patients, the film makes an important contribution to discussions about our commitment to taking care of each other, about the role of money and profit in medicine, and about the very nature of healing itself. The Mayos had a simple philosophy, “the needs of the patient come first.”

The Mayo Clinic and the Sisters of Saint Francis truly embody Faith, Hope, and Science
Review by James on 05/15/23 review stating The Mayo Clinic and the Sisters of Saint Francis truly embody Faith, Hope, and Science
I purchased the Blu-Ray and book back in 2020 and watched/read it again just recently. The holistic approach demonstrated in this documentary reflects the priceless synergies that can be created when you have all the medical professionals and Sisters within arms reach to collaborate and overcome challenges, especially with the patient(s) being more the hub and less a spoke. Sharing my own personal experience since I do have a similar diagnosis to one of the patients that was interviewed, knowing what your medical condition is half the battle. I was fortunate enough to have met the right medical professionals with battle field experience that led to my condition to be in remission at this time (although I did have a few relapses prior). Their insight and wisdom continues to give me a peace of mind and parallels the experiences as shown in this documentary.

The Mayo Clinic
Review by Tom on 03/05/22 review stating The Mayo Clinic
Excellent documentary by Ken Burns. Having known about the clinic and meeting some of its staff while living in Jacksonville Florida, Mayo Clinic has been and is a great addition to the health care system in Jacksonville and the world. The Ken Burns documentary on the clinic reinforces all the good that has been done by he clinic since its founding.

Inspiring story, wide-ranging history, captivating.

The video quality is phenomenal (for the blu-ray). While one might call this a fluff piece for the Mayo, my sense was that Ken Burns captured and shared what really is a miraculous and wonderful story. Call me gullible, but my sense is that the Mayo is the real deal - what really makes America great. Its so inspiring, but also a bit tragic to compare this with much of the rest of the american medical establishment, and realize that most people will never see a place like that. A synergistic system.

The Spirit that is Mayo I comes through
Review by Mamaloon on 07/17/20 review stating The Spirit that is Mayo I comes through
Having used the clinic now for 20 years, it has been a joy to view this informative, inspiring documentary on the Mayos the Sisters collaboration. The integrity generosity of the founders is unmatched. Their spirit really does come through when you receive care at Mayo today. Have watched this twice so now its time to purchase the DVD.

Fantastic program of The Mayo Clinic
Review by Randy V. on 07/17/20 review stating Fantastic program of The Mayo Clinic
This is a wonderful documentary by Ken Burns.......again. He does an unbelievable job on every program he does and this doesnt fall short. As being a patient of the Mayo Clinic the best way I can describe it is,,,if they cant do anything more for you when youre there...you sure think they did when you leave. Cant explain it any better. Its the best and you will be amazed from the video.
