NATURE: Ireland's Wild River

The Shannon is Ireland's greatest geographical landmark and the longest river. It is both a barrier and highway - a silver ribbon holding back the rugged landscapes of the west from the gentler plains to the east. On its journey south, the Shannon passes through a huge palette of rural landscapes; where on little-known backwaters, Ireland's wild animals and plants still thrive as almost nowhere else. For a year, wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson lives on the river - camping on its banks, exploring its countless tributaries in a traditional canoe, following the river from dawn to dusk through the four seasons, on a quest to film the natural history of the Shannon as it has never been seen or heard or experienced before.

relaxing and enjoyable
Review by Rob P. on 06/25/21 review stating relaxing and enjoyable
The narrator was taking the viewers through a fairly informal little expedition down the river Shannon, and discussing the wildlife. The frogs were a little PG perhaps, but the egrets(surprise!) were quite beautiful. The whole thing was quite enjoyable.

Got to see it with your kids, friends, significant others: its fun, educational, flabbergasting, and all true.See how animals reflect on our own feelings, actions and sense in the strive to pass our genes on to next generations.By the way, none of the males were found to violently attack their females: domestic violence in humans does not make any sense and is evidently counterproductive!

Absolutely spell binding. I couldnt begin to describe the feelings of deep love, respect, and trust that was demonstrated. The only language needed was the language of love.

I have been to Ireland several times but have never been able to go down the Shannon river. I have been to places that it goes through but it is much more grand on the water. A must have for anyone.

This is a video to watch when you want to keep everyone (of all ages) interested and entertained at the same time. The beavers were definitely the stars of the show, just by living their own busy and ingenious lives.

Celebrating the rarest of friendships
Review by Wildlife E. on 07/17/20 review stating Celebrating the rarest of friendships
A wondrous peek into the world of the mule deer. The remarkable friendship between Joe Hutto and the mule deer on his ranch is the rarest kind, where the years pass, but the memories of one another remain vivid, picking up right where they left off. He is right when he says he is privileged to have known the numerous individual deer in this special herd. Trust is such a rare commodity these days, among people as well as animals. It takes very special people to gain such trust, friendship and love from such sensitive and rightfully distrustful wild creatures. At once a heart-warming and heart-wrenching story.

Saving Otter 501 is an Amazing Story
Review by My T. on 07/17/20 review stating Saving Otter 501 is an Amazing Story
The rating is down one notch because of the production of the DVD. I recorded this program off Direct TV when it was broadcast and watched it a few times that way, which was of much better quality than the DVD. The colors seemed to be slightly faded and the clarity wasnt as good on the DVD.

Beaver Rehab-- One dam at a time
Review by North S. on 07/17/20 review stating Beaver Rehab-- One dam at a time
I had never really known much--or anything--about beavers, so when I first watched Leave it to Beavers on PBS, it was quite interesting to learn how new observations are showing that beavers actually rehabilitate a landscape; and can bring it from an almost barren desert, to a thriving and lush environment. Ive watched a lot of the Nature series, but so far, have bought very few (plan to put a change to that). This was one that I definitely wanted.

Great video
Review by Freedom on 07/17/20 review stating Great video
My Moluccan, Rosie and Patagonian Conure, Hawkeye - came from a caged background. Over 8 years, I gave them increasingly free flight. To the point that for the last twenty years, they go out their window in the morning, fly around in the trees all day and come back to roost at night. Its a matter of trusting them to come back. They know the safe house and food source. To those who clip wings and cage captive birds==Shame.

A wonderful story of living wild
Review by Jenni G. on 07/17/20 review stating A wonderful story of living wild
Joe Hutto is able to bridge the divide between scientific observation and heartfelt interaction without the sentimentality of wishful anthropomorphization. I gifted this to my young niece nephew to broaden their understanding of the wildlife that surrounds them.

NATURE: Parrot Confidential DVD by PBS K

Absolutely perfect presentation about unwanted, neglected, abused and forced relinquishment of parrots not just in U.S. but around the world. When will a major industry, philanthropist, corporation or other entity that recognizes the severe captive parrot crisis and support the founding of a national organization for presenting and representing the recommendatiions of the parrot community?

Excellent!!
Review by Pat review stating Excellent!!
The video shows how poorly humans (in general) do as companions to parrots. It documents why breeding of parrots for the pet trade should NOT continue. While some of us can adequately care for parrots - far too many find they cannot. Unfortunately for the birds, people usually find this out AFTER the birds have suffered the consequences of impropper diet, poor husbandry, lack of companionship of birds of their own species. This video needs to be distributed to other countries where breeding is still practiced at substantial rates - simply because they have not reached the point we have in the US with VAST numbers of rescue birds. They should be able to learn from our mistakes and unfortunate numbers of homeless, physically impaired and psychologically traumatized parrots.
