Mister Rogers summered in a modest house on a quiet corner of Nantucket Island. MTV producer Benjamin Wagner's mother rented the cottage next door. Mister Rogers really was his neighbor. On the afternoon of their first meeting, "America's Favorite Neighbor" asked the young journalist about his job. Wagner--a PBS mind in a jump-cut, sound-bit MTV world - expressed enthusiasm tempered with an iota of ambivalence.

Mister Rogers said warmly, "I feel so strongly that deep and simple is far more essential than shallow and complex." One year and many "deep and simple" conversations later, Rogers whispered, "Spread the message, Benjamin!"

After Rogers' death in 2003, Wagner and his brother, Christofer, set out to learn more about the man himself and discover what he meant by "deep and simple." The brothers' travels led them to conversations with Meet the Press anchor (and Nantucket neighbor) Tim Russert; Arthur creator Marc Brown; NPR correspondent (and sometimes Neighbohood co-host) Susan Stamberg; Neighborhood puppeteer and Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood founder, Dr. Susan Linn; and many other neighbors and friends of Mister Rogers.

The brothers come to know more than just the man and his luminous legacy. Their personal journey unearths the roots of Mister Rogers' values, unmasks the forces acting against depth and simplicity, and helps them to develop the means to lead deeper, simpler lives.

Mister Rogers Rocks!
Review by Twinkle T. on 07/17/20 review stating Mister Rogers Rocks!
This is an excellent DVD. I was amazed how many people Mister Rogers influenced. I was deeply moved and made me think how I could make changes within myself and maybe make small changes in my small circle of friends and community. I also really enjoye the extra sections with interviews with people he worked with and others with people he influenced. This is a must watch dvd for all ages.

Review by Parkerdraw on 07/17/20 review stating Mr.Rogers Friends talk about him.
This video gives insights into this man who paid attention to the love children Need. And, that adults need to. He did his show the way he lived. Accepting People the way they are. I showed a clip of it to a group of friends. There is a waiting List of friends borrowing it from me. The video does a great job communicating Mr. Rogers and his values to us.

I enjoyed getting even more of Fred Rogers wisdom nine years after his passing. Have been a fan since the late 70s and will never stop being a fan. His wisdom is timeless. I wish all PBS stations would continue to run his shows forever. There will never be a generation that does not need Mr. Rogers his neighborhood.

Brilliant, Captivating, A Must Have
Review by Kakie F. on 07/17/20 review stating Brilliant, Captivating, A Must Have
I was really touched by this narrative because it is a tribute to a man who inspired our imaginations, sent compelling messages and made each one of us feel seen as children. This is a moving documentary everyone should have in their collection because it does such a beautiful job of delivering his message that deep and simple is far more essential than shallow and complex. Important words to live by.

A must for every parent
Review by G G. on 07/17/20 review stating A must for every parent
Many PBS stations are not showing Mr. Rogers at a time children can watch it (if at all) and their parents need to know what motivated Fred Rogers to present his programs. Parents and their children need the security of his philosophy that every child is OK JUST the way they are. This film gives parents an insight into how to cultivate that.

Fitting Tribute
Review by Alice on 07/17/20 review stating Fitting Tribute
This video was a fitting tribute to a very humble Fred Rogers. He brought a peaceful respite for so many children, and adults, living in an increasingly fast paced society. It was wonderful to see how many lives he touched in his quiet and powerful way. His ability to see the positive in everyone is a lesson to us all. It was a delight to watch.

An absolute MUST SEE for parents
Review by Kjay on 07/17/20 review stating An absolute MUST SEE for parents
I was fortunate to view this documentary during regular PBS programming and I knew immediately, that my children (who are both new parents), needed to see this marvellous story for themselves. They have already shared with me that they will make certain that their little ones will benefit from the lessons (that they learned first hand) from their wonderful friend, Mr. Rogers.

A spell binding story of a familiar man
Review by Lks on 07/17/20 review stating A spell binding story of a familiar man
The Wagner brothers have elegantly and lovingly captured the essence of Mr. Rogers. I was spell-bound by how consistently Mr. Rogers lived his core values. His voice is so missed in the hubris of the multi-media we live in today. Yet, the Wagner brother has captured how he inspired so many that met him to live their best life. Thank you Benjamin and Christofer for taking on the challenge to spread the message...it is so much better to live simply and deep rather than complex and shallow!

Mr Rogers Real Neighborhood
Review by Maureen S. on 07/17/20 review stating Mr Rogers Real Neighborhood
I really didnt know what to expect when I went to see the Wagner Brothers movie on Mr. Rogers. I thought I was going back to the neighborhood that I watched with my children.I wasnt always mesmerized by Freds slow , melodic voice so my mind was a blank slate.. But, as the movie progressed I was taken on a journey. It was a journey into the heart of a man that expressed his love and dedication for children.I never thought that what he did was anything but a job to Mr. Rogers. The movie showed Mr Rogers passion for his program. I discovered that some of what he said came from his own personal experiences. He understood the pain of being bullied because as a child he was fat Freddie. He also stressed the significance of being present when you are interacting with another person. The importance of being present is even more significant as our own personal world today gets swallowed up into the world of technology.Parents need to be present in their childrens lives. The movie took my understanding of Mr. Rogers to another level. His message to every child I like you just the way you are is my message to my own three daughters today and will continue to be my message to my grandchildren. This documentary gives a rebirth to the meaning of Mr. Rogers. He is truly a gentle hero!

I cried for days
Review by Beauty B. on 07/17/20 review stating I cried for days
While my daughter was in orientation at Rollins College, I notice Fred Rogers brick on the Walk o Fame. It stated me thinking about all the children who were now entering college, and had spent everyday, even into high school hearing him say I like you just the way you are. What a good way to start a new life. I am now 70, and hoping that I remember to tell my grand children that, I like you just the way they are. Because, I do, and he did, too. When I saw this special on PBS, I had recently lost my husband, but had not cried. However, losing Mister Rogers was just too much. I started to cry, I couldnt stop. Once, again even in such grief, he gave me what I needed, release at last. I am now free to say, I like me just the way I am. Thank you, Fred!
