NATURE: Soul of the Elephant

Ironically, every dead elephant with its ivory intact is a reason to celebrate. It means an elephant died of natural causes, not bullets, snares or poison, and a soul was allowed to be celebrated and mourned by its herd. Award-winning filmmakers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert start with the remains of two bull elephants and through a series of key flashbacks, look at the lives they would have led, the dramas they may have seen, their great migrations for water with their families, and their encounters with lions and hyenas.

This film, shot over two years, is an intimate look at elephants through the lens of perhaps the greatest storytellers of natural history.

Move with the herd.
Review by Sweettweets55 on 07/17/20 review stating Move with the herd.
If you have a passionate love of these majastic creatures you will enjoying being a part of the herd in this up close and personal expedition of the married couple doing the documentary. They painstakingly manage to catch very touching moments as the herd makes a trip in Botswana. Seeing them in their natural habitat and how they interact with their young and the natural agression factors of dominant males was very interesting. Nicely done documentary film.

The Soul of the Elephant
Review by Wildanne on 07/17/20 review stating The Soul of the Elephant
Beautiful. The soul of the elephant was revealed through the music and the exquisit photography. The narrator spoke in an endearing manner that showed his love for these gentle and sensitive creatures. There were no scenes of poaching and violence, just references. As the herd traveled through the dry African terrain, they came across elephant skulls that died naturally. The herd would stop and play tribute to the dead one by carressing and rubbing their trunks against the old bones. This act could tell the herd who she was and if she died natually. During the film, I felt I was meditating deeply. I was so drawn in to the compassion and emotional grace of these powerful peace loving animals.

Review by Abiwhale on 07/17/20 review stating Never Felt So Close to Elephants ~
Thanks to the wonderful filmmakers for daring to delve into the lives and souls of elephants ~ and themselves ~ with such intuition and love. Ive never felt so close to elephants before now. The beauty of their lives, the purity, the filming in the misty dusk (made me cry), was perfect. Thank you! xo
