The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross

Written and presented by Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., director of W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University, this six-hour series explores the evolution of the African-American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed - forging their own history, culture and society against unimaginable odds.

Commencing with the origins of slavery in Africa, the series moves through five centuries of remarkable historic events right up to the present - when America is led by a black president, yet remains a nation deeply divided by race.

By highlighting the tragedies, triumphs and contradictions of the black experience, the series reveals to viewers that the African-American community has never been a uniform entity, and that its members have been actively debating their differences from their first days in this country.

Throughout the course of the series, viewers will see that the road to freedom for black people in America has not been linear, but more like the course of a river, full of loops and eddies, slowing, and occasionally reversing the current of progress.

Episodes include:
The Black Atlantic (1500-1800)
The Age of Slavery (1800-1860)
Into the Fire (1861-1896)
Making a Way Out of No Way (1897-1940)
Rise! (1940-1968)
It's Nation Time (1968-2013)

Worth buying, very informative, but lacking in some areas.
Review by Thomas C. on 05/14/22 review stating Worth buying, very informative, but lacking in some areas.
I purchased this DVD in September 2021 as part of the William Still/Underground Railroad Package (3 DVD series, and one book) to add to my collection of American History media (The Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, etc.). The African Americans: Many Rivers To Cross was very well written and presented by Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., put I was disappointed on some issues, namely these three: First, very little was mentioned about Jackie Robinson, his courageous struggle to break the color-barrier in American sports (and American society), and his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement that paved the way for Martin Luther King, The Sit-In Movement, and other hallmarks of that historical effort; Ken Burns devoted an entire series to Jackie Robinson, but he was only mentioned, once (in passing) in this set. In addition, I was discouraged that the Nashville Sit-Ins were given more prominence, even though, the more notable Greensboro (NC) Woolworth Sit-ins of February 1, 1960 took place days before. Although this is factually correct and relevant to the movement, I am a little biased as I reside in Greensboro, NC, being very proud that these Sit-Ins took place in a once very segregated, racist city of the Jim Crow South. Lastly, I am very troubled that so much positive attention was given to militant, nationalist (and violent) elements of the Civil Rights movement. Yes, those factions and figures needed to be mentioned, but as seen by the more successful methods of peaceful, civil disobedience from King, Jackie Robinson, and Booker T. Washington, they perhaps did more harm to the cause, than good (even today). In closing, I would recommend this PBS produced series from Professor Gates, but like some of Ken Burns documentaries, it is lacking and disappointing on some points.

This series connects all of the disjointed african american lessons that were lacking content and context taught in schools. It explains who and why the Africans in america are strong and great.

A simply wonderful series! I thought I was well educated and learned some things I did not know! This series really illustrated how MUCH we have overcome...and how far we have to go. My pride in who I am was markedly increased after viewing this material.

So well told ...

It was riveting to say the least. I wasnt too sure where all the pieces to this puzzle fit but this was a masterful telling of history. My son age 10 was angry at the interruptions for the fund raising of PBS and you know something is good when he wants the story like that.

I bought this DVD for my grandsons. They did not get a chance to watch the series and I felt that they needed to have this history in a clear and unbiased format. My daughter states they will watch it as a family--I will join them to watch it again.

The best item in my history collection!

Thanks Dr. Gates for your past and well as this historical classic. Many Rivers to Cross is one of my favorites. I was particularly impressed with Part 2 involving the Civil Rights Era. Happy you chose the eloquent Rev. David Forbes to assist in recording our history...and not just a story about our history. Although now retired from his Church, he is yet a fighter for justice here in Raleigh. Please continue your great work!

African American History
Review by Beverly on 12/13/20 review stating African American History
This is an EXCELLENT documentary that depict harsh trials and tribulations of the American black. Black History should be a mandatory subject in all schools. I strongly believe that if more black youths were aware of their history, theyd stop taking things for granted such as having the rights to learn and vote.

Wonderful Birthday Gift For My family
Review by Jeanne N. on 12/13/20 review stating Wonderful Birthday Gift For My family
I purchased this wonderful dvd for my birthday and a teaching tool to share with my family. I do not want my kids and grandkids to wait as long as I had to live to learn such amazing information. We all need to watch it, process what we see and begin to talk and work to make the next story better. I have so many questions and hope to find answers. Thank you PBS for broadcasting such wonderful programs.
