John James Audubon's story is dramatic and surprising. He was not born in America, but saw more of the North American continent than virtually anyone alive. His growing apprehension about the destruction of nature became his prophecy. As an artist and naturalist his achievements were monumental. Famous for The Birds of America - an astonishing collection of 435 life-size portraits of every bird then known in the United States - took Audubon 18 years to complete.

John James Audubon: Drawn from Nature provides a large clear window onto life on the American frontier; and how people (on both sides of the Atlantic) regarded nature. It creates a meaningful portrait of Art and Science in the first decades of the 19th century. It shows us a person, and a people: the life and times of John James Audubon.

Why the AV version? Because it provides additional usage options for PBS videos. AV versions come with limited performance rights so they can be shown in classrooms, at PTA meetings, during after school programs, and transmitted on a closed-circuit system within a building or on a single campus. They also can be enjoyed in admission-free public screenings, which also makes them ideal for use by library patrons and businesses involved in community clubs and organizations.
