Thrilling fine art

We have seen the first three mysteries so far. Two were marked by their locations, a grimy part of Paris and Givet, a town on the border of Belgium and France. The photography belonged to film noir and the stories, carried along by Bruno Cremer, have psychological depth worthy of more than one viewing.

Maigret, The Complete Series
Review by Yolande C. on 02/28/22 review stating Maigret, The Complete Series
The best of all the series I have seen on inspector Maigrets investigations! It took me a year to watch the 54 films and I enjoyed most of them. I especially appreciated the moderate pace of the films, a far cry from the agitation and noise of actual TV programs. Bruno Cremers interpretation of Maigret is my favorite: a calm reflexive man, taking his time to analyze a situation, never allowing anybody to intimidate him or manipulate him, progressing step by step towards the solution of a murder. Women viewers will be surprised at seeing how much Maigret respects women involved in the stories, no matter what is their social place in life. This was before the feminist movement in France and Belgium, in the films taking place in the 1950s and 1960s. Do we see patient and loving Mrs. Maigret? Yes, at least twice and she is a charming person. R. Atkinson playing Maigret, in the most recent series, would be my second choice, very close to Bruno Cremer, as a very good interpreter of the role.

Best Maigret of the 14 years series!
Review by Louis on 02/15/22 review stating Best Maigret of the 14 years series!
Although I dont speak French, this series starring Bruno Cremer is the BEST of the lot. It comes with English subtitles and Cremers acting is superb. The best is that it is so much in line with the novels. Highly recommend.

Original Maigret Series
Review by Catherine on 02/07/22 review stating Original Maigret Series
My husband and I recently watched the newer Maigret series on PBS and really enjoyed it. When we discovered that the older, subtitled series was available, we debated about buying it for several months because of the price. However, we finally made the plunge and ordered it. We consider it money well-spent! Very enjoyable!

Maigret
Review by Terelle on 02/07/22 review stating Maigret
I loved this series when it was aired on my local PBS station but have only seen one season. I like the time period it is set in - the 50s, early 60s. I like the slow, thoughtful demeanor of Maigret in solving crimes.

While strolling through my PBS station I came upon Maigret but the British addition with Roan Atkinson. I enjoyed the little I saw so I ordered the set. I was surprised and disappointed when it arrived and discovered I had ordered the original French version. I thought I would give it a try and I adore it. I am used to subtitles so I dont mind. Mr Cremer is excellent as Maigret. The stories are intelligent, cerebral and interesting. No ridiculous shoot outs or every actor being a 10. The settings are so authentic 1950s and although it is shot in colour it seems black and white as the scenes are dreary, which adds to the ambience. I limit myself to one episode a day so I have this to look forward to during lockdown. I absolutely recommend this series.
